John Birkhead
Director of Student Ministies
John grew up in the Kansas City area and considers himself a BBQ snob. “I got my first smoker (a small R2D2 unit) as a prize. The first weekend I had it, I smoked a turkey and a rack of ribs. I was hooked!! I have upgraded my smoker 3 times since then.” MU Fans need to cut John a little bit of slack as his passion for the Jayhawks is hereditary. He is the 4th generation of his family to attend KU. “The only thing that beats out BBQ and the Jayhawks is my passion for Student Ministry. I have been working as a Student Minister for nearly 13 years now and there is nothing as awesome and humbling as to see a student’s life transformed as they develop a personal relationship with God through Jesus. It is the only thing that could draw me away from my family, my favorite BBQ joints, and my Jayhawks!!” John has a dog named Monty (named after his favorite movie - Monty Python and the Holy Grail)

Bill Fenlon
sr high rejuv discussion leader, sr high adult leader
Bill was semi-recruited to the Green Trails Student Ministry to help offset the “John Birkhead KU effect”. He has a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Webster University and spent six years in the US Navy playing guitar and occasionally fixing a radar. His real call to student ministry came through the pastor of his home church in Mexico, MO. He was asked to help chaperone a group of high-school students on a trip to North Carolina and enjoyed the experience immensely. After a year or so of wondering what he could do to help at Green Trails, he became part of John’s summer 2010 recruiting class and is looking forward to the ongoing opportunities to serve the Students of Green Trails. His favorite movie is “Fletch”. Or “The Shawshank Redemption”. Or “The Princess Bride”. Or “Braveheart”. Or “Star Wars”. He also enjoys the fruits of BBQ Master John and Padawan Learner Kevin’s smokers (but is far too lazy to do it himself).
